Daniels was shot by Budhnarine Jagernauth, called ‘Fat Man', 38, the goldsmith whose Lot 161 Meadow Brook Drive establishment the suspects had attacked.

Chief of Staff, Edward Collins, told Kaieteur News yesterday that Daniels, of 54 D'Urban Street , Lodge, would be interdicted from duty once the army confirms that he was involved in the robbery.

He added that if ranks are involved in criminal activities the army does not take its people into its custody, choosing instead to let them feel the full force of the law.

Reports state that the men, one of whom was armed with a handgun and another with a knife, robbed Jagernauth of quantity of gold jewellery and raw gold, and $140,000.

According to reports, Jagernauth was alone in the jewellery establishment when one of the men entered, enquired about cleaning some jewellery and left.

A police press release stated that as he was leaving, the man with the firearm entered and held the goldsmith at gunpoint and ordered him to lie on the floor. He then demanded cash and jewellery.

The man who enquired about cleaning jewellery and another bandit then came in and took away a quantity of gold jewellery and raw gold and fled.

As they were making their escape, Daniels, who was armed, discharged several rounds at Jagernauth who had come out of his establishment in pursuit of the men.

The goldsmith returned fire and struck Daniels in his head but that did not stop the soldier from running away, leaving a train of blood in his wake. The two had by this time gone in the opposite direction but to their misfortune they ran into a police patrol that was operating in the area. They were arrested while trying to escape along the roadway. Daniels was found in a clump of bushes with the gunshot injury to his head, apparently having collapsed from a loss of blood. The police have not recovered the firearm.

The other two had come on a bicycle but fled, leaving the cycle just outside the fence of the victim's operation but they took with them a bag containing the loot they had removed from the jewellery establishment.

The police quickly cordoned off the area. They later reported that they had recovered some of the stolen jewellery.

A press release from the army stated that Private Daniels is under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital while the others are in police custody assisting with investigations into the alleged robbery.

This newspaper understands that members of the GDF visited the scene of the crime yesterday afternoon and subsequently went to the police station to talk to Jagernauth.

Shirley Carreiro, who lives in the same yard with Jagernauth's shop, said that the robbery victim is her son-in-law's brother.

She said that her son-in-law and the victim would operate the shop but at the time of the robbery Jagernauth was alone.

Carreiro added that the bandits were unmasked.

Investigations are continuing.
